Collin Morikawa, the winner of The Open Championship in 2021 and currently #2 in the Official
World Golf Ranking, has committed to the Valspar Championship. It will be Morikawa’s first
appearance in the Valspar Championship.
With Morikawa, the growing Valspar Championship field now includes five of the top 13 players in
the current OWGR (also #4 Dustin Johnson, #7 Xander Schauffele who is also making his Valspar
debut, #12 Louis Oosthuizen and #13 Sam Burns who won the Valspar in 2021). In August,
Morikawa went 3-0-1 in his Ryder Cup debut as the US defeated Europe and in September, he tied
for third in the Olympic Golf competition in Japan.
The Valspar Championship, Tampa Bay’s PGA TOUR event, will be held March 14-20 on the
Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort. One of the PGA TOUR’s fastest-growing events since
Valspar assumed sponsorship in 2014, the tournament is now a week-long community event with
many activities for patrons.
Morikawa, who turns 25 on February 6, has five PGA TOUR victories, including two Majors (2020
PGA Championship, 2021 The Open Championship), since making his PGA TOUR debut less than
three years ago. He has been a constant fixture in the OWGR top seven since his PGA
Championship victory in 2020 and his finished in the top seven in five of his last six worldwide
outings which include a victory at the DP World Tour Championship Dubai. With that victory, he
became the first American to claim the European Tour’s Race To Dubai. The Los Angeles native
has a degree in business administration from Cal where he reached #1 in World Amateur Golf
Ranking.
The current field also includes OWGR #17 Brooks Koepka, #21 Jason Kokrak, #22 Tyrrell Hatton
and #25 Matt Fitzpatrick – as well as past champions Gary Woodland, Kevin Streelman, Luke
Donald and Adam Hadwin and recent Major Championship winners Bubba Watson, Danny Willett
and Henrik Stenson.
