Covering the Valspar Championship Daily

Thursday, March 13

The start of the Valspar Championship presented by BB&T is here after the completion of pre-tournament activities on Wednesday.

A field of 144 will chase a first prize of 500 FedExCup points, a check of $1,026,000 and possession of the unique Valspar Championship Trophy on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort.

Defending champion Kevin Streelman spoke Wednesday about what it is like to win a PGA TOUR event. “My agent sent me a picture of the ticket (with his picture on it) a few weeks ago.  It’s neat, really neat to see that and see it on the photos coming in (to the property),” he said. “For my first win it was special, a special week and special place to have it.”

Jim Furyk, the winner on the Copperhead in 2010, also has fond memories of the Copperhead. “It’s always nice to come back,” he said, “I love the golf course.  It’s one of my favorites.”

Furyk said he first played the Copperhead in junior golf and then first competed on it as a pro in a pair of JCPenney Classic mixed team events.  Furyk recounted that he made a hole in one on the 4th hole, a hole that has never been aced in a PGA TOUR event, in one of those events.

There were no changes in the field Wednesday.  Tim Wilkinson remains first alternate.

In another part of the tournament on Wednesday, Valspar, together with their longstanding partner Habitat for Humanity, kicked off the Valspar Championship with a community build by painting the interior and exterior of a pair of Habitat homes in Clearwater.

Participants in the build included Valspar CEO Gary Hendrickson, along with other Valspar executives; Sheila Johnson, CEO of Salamander Hotels & Resorts; members of the PGA TOUR Wives Association; PGA TOUR players Geoff Ogilvy, Bo Van Pelt and Robert Garrigus; and Habitat families.

Valspar believes color has the power to change lives, and as the National Paint Partner of Habitat for Humanity, Valspar provides paint for all Habitat homes built in the U.S. Guests at the Valspar Championship will have a chance to support Habitat for Humanity during the tournament by participating in the “Hole It for Habitat” putting challenge at the Valspar Expo Tent onsite.

The team led by Cameron Tringale was second at 59 with the team led by Scott Stallings winning a match of cards tie-breaker for third at 61.
