Covering the Valspar Championship Daily

Wednesday, March 11, 2015

The interesting preliminaries are done, and now we are on to the big show.  The 2015 Valspar Championship presented by BB&T begins tomorrow with a field of 144 ready to test the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor.

The field remained unchanged on Wednesday, meaning that five of the world’s top 10 players in the latest Official World Golf Ranking will hit the course.

One of them is Henrik Stenson, ranked third in the OWGR, who is making his first appearance in the tournament.  After his Wednesday round in the DEX imaging Pro-Am, he gave a positive initial assessment of the Copperhead.

“I heard some great remarks about this tournament and the course, and I thought, why not give it a try.  I think it is a course that will suit my game if I play to my strength.  My iron play is normally pretty solid.  That’s something you need around here.”

Back after a one-year absence is OWGR #4 Adam Scott.  “I enjoy playing golf courses I really like and I really like this course.  That’s why I’m here…I’m hoping to kind of jump start my year here this week.”

Also on Wednesday was OWGR #10 Jordan Spieth.  “I really like this place,” he said. “I really like this tournament and this golf course and enjoy my time here.”

The official tee times for the first two rounds of play on Thursday and Friday can be viewed here.

Scott and Spieth are paired together for the first two rounds and will be joined by Padraig Harrington.  Their Thursday tee time is 8:15 a.m off the 1st tee, with Stenson in the group immediately behind them with Patrick Reed and Ernie Els.

Three former Valspar Championship winners – Gary Woodland, Luke Donald and Jim Furyk – will play together in the afternoon at 1:10 p.m.  Another Copperhead winner, two times in fact, is in the 1:20 grouping in Retief Goosen who will be playing with Ian Poulter and Alex Cejka.  Poulter will be wearing outfits color-coordinated with Valspar paint colors.  His Thursday ensemble can be seen here.

Wednesday’s DEX imaging Pro-Am was won by the team of Carl Pettersson, the 2005 Valspar Championship winner.  Their 13-under score beat the teams of two other former champions, Retief Goosen and Kevin Streelman, by one shot.  Pettersson’s teammates were Shon Flaherty, Hunter Orr and Stephen Blume.
