Covering the Valspar Championship Daily

Valspar Championship presented by BB&T Week continued on Tuesday with a professional practice day while the tournament and PGA TOUR hosted a successful Executive Women’s Day presented by Astellas.  Nearly 300 ladies enjoyed a day full of activities including a keynote speech by Carey Lorenz, the Navy’s first female F-14 fighter pilot.

The Valspar Championship presented by BB&T will begin Thursday morning with a field of 144.  There was one change to the field as Greg Chalmers earned the final of four local qualifying spots with success in the Tuesday morning resumption of Monday’s suspended playoff.  Chalmers is anything but a “local” qualifier.  He is an Australian who lives in the Dallas area, just like last year’s winner John Senden.  And like Senden, he has had success on the Copperhead, most notably a 4th in 2013.  Chalmers played in the WGC Cadillac Championship last week by virtue of his win in the 2014 Australian PGA Championship.

The lone amateur in the field, Ollie Schniederjans, the winner of the 2014 McCormack Medal met with the media on Tuesday.  He earned his spot in the 2015 Valspar Championship with his victory in the Valspar Invitational at The Floridian nearly one year ago.  He has made this tournament his PGA TOUR debut, even as he has played four professional events on three other tours in the meantime.  The Georgia Tech All-American placed 41st in the 2014 Scottish Open and was 5th in the Tour’s Air Capital Classic.

In his Tuesday practice round, he played with three contemporaries from his days on the junior golf circuit who have already known success on the PGA TOUR as professionals – Jordan Spieth, Honda runner-up Daniel Berger and Justin Thomas.  The latter two went to Florida State before turning pro.

“I played the Copperhead in the Southern Amateur,” said Schniederjans.  “My impression today is that it was very pure and very green.  This is as challenging as it gets.”
