Covering the Valspar Championship presented by BB&T Daily

Rays pitcher Matt Moore teamed with Italian pro Francesco Molinari and three amateurs (Marcus Greene, Jana Jones and Dennis Murphy) to win Monday’s Trinity Pharma Group Pro-Am presented by BB&T by a three-stroke margin with a best ball score of 17-under-par 54.

It was a good afternoon for MLB pitchers as R.A. Dickey of the Blue Jays was on the second-place team with pro David Hearn.  Hearn, a Canadian, will be in Dunedin on Tuesday to throw out the first pitch for Toronto’s Grapefruit League game.

The Phillies were represented as Cole Hamels teamed with Ollie Schniederjans, the world’s top-ranked amateur who makes his PGA TOUR debut this week, for a 59 that won a four-way tie to take third place.

The Monday qualifier at Southern Hills Golf Club became a Tuesday qualifier for the final spot in the Valspar Championship field.  Michael Kinkopf, Jonathan Randolph and Roberto Castro shot 6-under-par 66s to take three of the four available spots.  The final position involved a six-way playoff among those who shot 67.  By the time dark fell, four contestants had been eliminated leaving veteran pro Greg Chalmers to contest Mark Hubbard on Tuesday morning.

There were two other players added to the field from the alternate list on Monday.  Steve Wheatcroft and Blayne Barber made it when Aaron Baddeley and Dudley Hart withdrew.
