Covering the Valspar Championship Daily

For the third consecutive round, the Valspar Championship has an individual with a one-shot lead – and each day has been a different leader.

Ryan Moore, already a winner in the 2014-15 season with a victory at the CIMB Classic in Malaysia, has the honors heading into Sunday’s final round after shooting a bogey-free 67 on Saturday.  After starting off with 12 consecutive pars, Moore birdied four of his last six holes to move one shot ahead of 21-year-old phenom Jordan Spieth who had a 68.

A win for Moore would be his fifth on the PGA TOUR.  With the CIMB Classic win, Moore is in position to become the TOUR’s first two-time winner this season and would take over first place in the FedExCup points race.  He is currently ranked 32nd in the OWGR.

Moore has now played 30 consecutive holes without a bogey and has the fewest (2) in the field this week.  With three straight rounds in the 60’s, Moore becomes the first player to accomplish the feat in this event since 2012.

Spieth, still only 21, has already won the 2013 John Deere Classic as well as several non-TOUR events including the Emirates Australian Open in November and the Hero World Challenge in December.  He is ranked 10th in the OWGR. Spieth earned Special Temporary Membership to the PGA Tour when he finished T7 here in 2013.  Currently a shot back in solo second, Spieth would become just the 4th player since 1940 to win twice on the PGA TOUR prior to his 22nd birthday.  He would join Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia and Robert Gamez.

The next to last group is Derek Ernst (-7) and Sean O’Hair (-6), the 2008 winner on the Copperhead.  The two groups before them contain three more members of the OWGR top 16 – #3 Henrik Stenson, #14 Matt Kuchar and #16 Patrick Reed.

Moore shared low round honors (67) Saturday with Daniel Summerhays who’s currently tied for 8th…Summerhays and Moore were the only players to play Round three bogey free…Vijay Singh is tied for 8th.  He is seeking his first Top 10 in a PGA TOUR event since October 2013 at the Frys.com Open…Included in the Top 9 heading into Sunday are 4 players in the Official World Golf Ranking Top 16 and three who finished in the Top 10 in the FedEx Cup standings last year.
